September 21, 2021 Housing is a human right and a key component of Reconciliation. The partners at Clear Direction have spent over 20 years working with Indigenous communities and organizations to address housing needs. Housing in Indigenous communities is chronically underfunded and dependent on centralized government policies. Government proposed solutions aren’t addressing the needs of Indigenous communities. These are cookie-cutter, colonial solutions that fail to address specific needs. Why? Because Indigenous voices aren’t at the table. Proposing a solution to a community’s problem without including community members is short-sighted. People who live in the communities and understand the issues at hand must be seen and heard. Taking over 'Care and Control' Canada and Indigenous communities have started on negotiations and processes of 'devolution' in many areas, including housing.
Devolution is the process of transferring government responsibilities from one Nation to another. Taking over the responsibility of governance is a MAMMOTH undertaking. That’s why Clear Direction has developed a successful framework and tools to guide Indigenous communities to start the process. Visit our Services page to learn more about our framework and tools. Together, we can find housing solutions to meet the specific needs of Indigenous communities.
